Estimated Native Range
Summary
Abeliophyllum distichum, commonly known as White Forsythia, is a deciduous shrub native to the open woodlands and forest edges of Korea. It typically grows to 1–1.5 m (3 ft 3 in – 4 ft 11 in) tall with a rounded form, featuring multi-stemmed and arching branches. The leaves are opposite, simple, 5–9 cm (2–4 in) long, and 3–4.5 cm (1–2 in) wide, with a pubescent texture on both surfaces. Noteworthy for its early spring bloom, White Forsythia produces fragrant flowers that are white or pink-tinged, about 1–1.5 cm in diameter, with a four-lobed corolla, appearing before the foliage. The flowers are particularly showy due to their timing, often being one of the first shrubs to bloom in the season.
White Forsythia is valued for its early flowering period, which can bring life to a dormant garden. It is commonly used in border planting, as a specimen, or in mass plantings for a dramatic early spring display. This shrub is hardy to USDA Zone 4 and adapts well to a range of garden settings. It prefers full sun to part shade and requires medium to high amounts of water, with soils offering medium drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, occasional pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and promotes vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
