Summary
Abies bornmuelleriana, commonly known as Turkish fir, is a coniferous evergreen tree native to the mountainous regions of Northern Turkey. It is a subspecies of the Nordmann fir and is adapted to cool, temperate climates. The Turkish fir typically exhibits a narrow and conical form, reaching a mature height of 20 to 30 meters (60 to 100 feet) and a width of 1.8 to 4 meters (6 to 28 feet). The needles of this tree are notable for their upward growth habit, revealing a silvery underside that contributes to the tree’s ornamental value. The pleasant fragrance of its foliage is an added attraction.
The Turkish fir is valued for its aesthetic appeal and is often used as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks. Its narrow, conical shape and attractive foliage make it a popular choice for urban planting and as a Christmas tree. The tree requires full sun to part shade and medium amounts of water, thriving in soils with medium drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as aphids and diseases like root rot if not properly cared for. It is not known to have aggressive roots or to be invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
