Estimated Native Range
Summary
Abies firma, commonly known as Momi Fir or Japanese Fir, is an evergreen conifer native to the montane forests of central and southern Japan. It thrives at altitudes of 164-3937 feet (50-1200 meters) and is adapted to volcanic soils with good drainage. This species typically reaches up to 164 feet (50 meters) in height and 7 feet (2.1 meters) in trunk diameter, forming a broad conical crown with straight branches. The leaves are needle-like, bright green on the upper surface and greyish-green below, contributing to its ornamental value. The cones are initially green, maturing to yellow-brown, and disintegrate in October to release seeds.
Momi Fir is valued for its stately form and dense foliage, making it a desirable ornamental tree in warm temperate regions. It is also used as a grafting understock for other fir cultivars due to its robustness. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and can tolerate full sun to partial shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fir woolly adelgid and root rot in poorly drained conditions. Momi Fir is not commonly used in urban planting due to its large size but may be found in botanical gardens and larger landscapes.CC BY-SA 4.0
