Summary

Abies koreana, commonly known as Korean Fir, is an evergreen tree native to the high mountain forests and alpine regions of South Korea. It is a relatively small fir, reaching heights of 10–18 meters (33–59 feet) with a trunk diameter of up to 0.7 meters (2 feet 4 inches). At higher elevations, near the tree line, it often adopts a shrubby form. The Korean Fir is notable for its dark green, needle-like leaves and striking purple cones that stand upright on the branches. The cones disintegrate to release winged seeds about 5–6 months after pollination. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer.

The Korean Fir is highly valued for its ornamental features, including its compact size, which makes it suitable for smaller gardens. It is also appreciated for its dense foliage and the unique appearance of its cones, which can be prolific even on young trees. This species is often used in parks and gardens for its aesthetic appeal and as a specimen tree. It requires full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soil to thrive. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as aphids and diseases like fir needle blight. Gardeners should be aware of these potential issues and monitor for signs of distress.CC BY-SA 4.0
