Summary
Abutilon pictum, commonly known as Redvein Abutilon or Redvein Indian Mallow, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to Brazil and Argentina, where it thrives in subtropical forests and woodland edges. It can grow up to 5 meters (16 ft) tall and 2 meters (6.6 ft) wide, with an upright and branching habit. The plant’s striking bell-shaped flowers, which are yellow to orange-red with prominent dark red veining, measure 2–4 cm in length and bloom prolifically from April to September, with a longer flowering period in warmer subtropical areas. The flowers are quite showy and attract a variety of pollinators, including native bees and hummingbirds.
Redvein Abutilon is valued for its ornamental features, including its vibrant flowers and broad, maple-like leaves. It is widely used in gardens in subtropical and warm temperate climates, and is also suitable for container planting on patios and balconies, or as a winter houseplant in colder regions. This plant prefers fertile, sandy, loamy, or well-drained clay soils and requires consistent moisture. It is frost tender and does not tolerate temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F). In cultivation, it performs best in full sun to part shade and benefits from high amounts of water and medium soil drainage. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to pests such as whiteflies and aphids.CC BY-SA 4.0
