Summary
Acacia acuminata, commonly known as Raspberry Jam Tree due to the fragrance of its wood, is a small deciduous tree endemic to the semi-arid regions of Western Australia. It is typically found in Eucalypt woodlands and shrublands, often on sandy or gravelly soils. This species grows to a height of 10-23 feet (3-7 meters) and has a distinctive appearance with its bright green, narrow phyllodes (leaf-like structures) and clusters of lemon yellow flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer. The flowers are moderately showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Acacia acuminata is valued for its hard, durable wood with a unique raspberry jam scent, making it a favorite for crafting, woodturning, and as round fencing material. It is also used as a host tree in Sandalwood plantations. Gardeners appreciate its high frost tolerance and moderate salt tolerance, which make it suitable for a range of challenging environments. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soils, preferably mimicking its native sandy or gravelly substrates, and can tolerate drought once established. It thrives in full sun to part shade. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
