Estimated Native Range
Summary
Acacia prominens, commonly known as golden rain wattle, Gosford wattle, or grey sally, is a shrub or tree native to coastal and sub-coastal regions of eastern Australia, particularly in New South Wales. It typically grows to heights of 16-30 feet (5-9 meters), but can occasionally reach towering heights of 66-82 feet (20-25 meters). This species is characterized by its glabrous branchlets, smooth grey bark, and narrowly elliptic phyllodes that are 1-2 inches long. The golden rain wattle blooms between July and September, producing showy, lemon-yellow to pale-yellow spherical flower heads that are highly attractive to a variety of pollinators.
Acacia prominens is valued for its ornamental flowers and ability to grow in a range of soil types, although it prefers well-drained soils. It is often used for rehabilitation of degraded lands and as a garden specimen in Australian gardens. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and can tolerate moderate drought once established. While it has a reputation for being easy to maintain, it can become invasive outside its native range, so gardeners should check local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
