Estimated Native Range
Summary
Acer buergerianum, commonly known as Trident Maple, is a deciduous tree native to various habitats in China and Taiwan, including riverbanks, mountain slopes, and forest edges. It is a small to medium-sized tree that typically reaches a height of 5–20 meters with a trunk up to 50 cm in diameter. The leaves are trifoliate, resembling a trident, which gives the tree its common name. The foliage turns a brilliant orange-red in the fall, adding seasonal interest. The flowers are inconspicuous, yellow-green, and appear in pendulous corymbs in spring, followed by distinctive samaras with two winged seeds, each seed 4–7 mm in diameter, with a 15 mm wing; the wings are forward-pointing and often overlapping.
Trident Maple is valued for its moderate growth rate, adaptability to urban conditions, and its attractive exfoliating bark, which reveals a mosaic of colors underneath. It is often used in bonsai, street plantings, and as a specimen tree in gardens. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils but is adaptable to various soil types, including clay. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf scorch in hot, dry conditions and may require protection from strong winds.CC BY-SA 4.0
