Summary

Acer rubrum, commonly known as Red Maple, is a deciduous tree native to mixed hardwood forests and riparian areas in the Eastern and Central United States and Southeastern Canada. It typically grows to a medium to large size, reaching heights of 27 to 38 meters (90 to 120 ft) with a broad, rounded canopy. The bark is pale grey and smooth in young trees, darkening and cracking into slightly raised long plates as the tree matures. The Red Maple is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn, which adds a striking splash of color to the landscape.

Red Maple is valued for its rapid growth, ease of transplanting, attractive form, and ecological benefits, including providing food for wildlife such as squirrels. It is extensively planted in urban areas where there is ample room for its root system. However, its low root system can be invasive and may cause problems if planted near paving. In cultivation, Red Maple thrives in full sun or part shade, requires high amounts of water, and can adapt to soils with fast, medium, or slow drainage. It is a popular choice for urban planting, large gardens, and parks for its ornamental appeal and ecological benefits.CC BY-SA 4.0
