Summary

Achillea tomentosa, commonly known as Woolly Yarrow, is a perennial herb native to the dry, open areas and rocky slopes of southern Europe. It typically forms a low-growing mat reaching 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) in height and spreading 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) wide. The plant is characterized by its silvery-gray, woolly foliage and small, bright yellow flower heads that bloom from early to mid-summer. The flowers are arranged in flat-topped clusters, making them quite showy and attractive to pollinators.

Woolly Yarrow is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as a ground cover in sunny locations. Its low maintenance requirements and resistance to deer and rabbits add to its appeal for gardeners. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate light shade. It is also used in traditional medicine and has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its performance in cultivation. Care should be taken to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
