Summary
Acnistus arborescens, commonly known as Hollowheart, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to tropical and subtropical forests in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. It typically grows to a height of 15-30 feet (4.5-9 meters) and a width of 8-15 feet (2.4-4.5 meters). The plant features a dense, bushy form with glossy, dark green leaves. During the summer and fall, it produces tubular, blue to lavender flowers that are followed by abundant, showy, golden-yellow berries.
Hollowheart is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its attractive flowers and fruit, which provide visual interest and can attract wildlife, especially birds, to the garden. It is used in tropical and subtropical landscapes for naturalistic plantings, as a specimen plant, or for creating informal hedges and screens. It prefers full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, thriving in well-drained soils. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to pests such as aphids and whiteflies. Gardeners should also be aware that the plant can spread if conditions are favorable, and it may require pruning to maintain its shape and size.CC BY-SA 4.0
