Estimated Native Range
Summary
Aeonium canariense, commonly known as Giant Velvet Rose, is an evergreen succulent native to the rocky, dry slopes and scrubland of the Canary Islands. It forms large, velvety rosettes of fleshy leaves close to the ground, and its flower spikes can reach up to 70 cm tall. The plant typically has a height and width of 60 cm. The yellow flowers, which bloom in the winter, are arranged in conical clusters and are moderately showy, adding a splash of color to the garden during cooler months.
Giant Velvet Rose is valued for its sculptural foliage and winter flowering habit, making it a striking addition to rock gardens, succulent collections, and Mediterranean-themed landscapes. It is also suitable for container planting due to its moderate size. This Aeonium requires minimal maintenance, is drought-tolerant once established, and prefers well-draining soil. While it thrives in full sun to part shade, in extremely hot climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial to prevent leaf scorch. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases, but overwatering can lead to root rot. Propagation is easily achieved through cuttings, which root readily.CC BY-SA 4.0
