Summary
Aeonium haworthii, commonly known as Haworth’s Aeonium, is an evergreen succulent native to the Canary Islands, where it thrives on rocky slopes, cliffs, and dunes. This plant typically forms a densely branched small shrub, reaching heights of up to 60 centimeters. Its winding shoots are somewhat mesh-like, with diameters of 3 to 6 millimeters, and bear flat rosettes that are 6 to 11 centimeters in diameter. The Haworth’s Aeonium blooms in spring, producing panicles of cream-colored, pointed flowers. The inflorescence is loose and hemispherical, measuring 6 to 16 centimeters in both length and width. The flowers are held on bare stems that are 2 to 12 millimeters long, with lanceolate, pointed petals that are pale yellow to whitish with pink variegation, 7 to 9 millimeters long and 1.2 to 1.8 millimeters wide.
This species is valued for its drought tolerance and architectural form, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, succulent collections, and as a container plant in regions with mild climates. It is also appreciated for its ease of maintenance and its ability to thrive with minimal water. In the United States, it is suitable for outdoor cultivation in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. Haworth’s Aeonium requires full sun to maintain its compact form and vibrant foliage color. It prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate very low to medium water conditions. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to aphids and mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
