Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agastache urticifolia, commonly known as nettleleaf giant hyssop, is an aromatic perennial herb native to moist meadows, streambanks, and forest clearings in western North America, from British Columbia to California and east to Colorado. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 5 feet with an erect stem and lance-shaped to nearly triangular, toothed leaves that are up to 3 inches long and wide. From mid-summer to early fall, it produces dense spikes of showy flowers with long sepals tipped with bright purple and tubular corollas in shades of pink and purple, which are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
Nettleleaf giant hyssop is valued for its fragrant foliage and vibrant flowers, making it a popular choice for pollinator gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils with regular moisture, although it is drought-tolerant once established. This plant is also used in herbal medicine, traditionally to treat rheumatism, upset stomachs, and colds. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
