Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agathis robusta, commonly known as Queensland Kauri, is an evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Queensland, Australia, and parts of New Guinea. It is a member of the Araucariaceae family and can grow straight and tall to a height of 30–50 meters with a trunk diameter of up to 3 meters. The bark is smooth and scaly, and the tree produces ovate to lanceolate leaves. Queensland Kauri is not known for showy flowers; instead, it has male and female cones, with the female cones maturing into large, round seeds. This species is slow-growing and long-lived, with some specimens estimated to be over 1,000 years old.
Queensland Kauri is valued for its timber and is also planted as an ornamental tree in parks and large gardens. It requires a subtropical to tropical climate and does best in full sun or partial shade, with medium amounts of water. It prefers well-drained soils but can adapt to a range of soil types. While it is not commonly used in urban settings due to its large size, it can serve as a magnificent specimen tree in the right conditions. Gardeners should note that due to its potential size, it should be planted where it has ample space to grow. Potential problems include susceptibility to phytophthora root rot and termites.CC BY-SA 4.0
