Summary
Agave colorata, commonly known as Mescal Ceniza, is an evergreen succulent native to the coastal thorn scrub of Sonora in Northwestern Mexico. This plant typically grows to a height and width of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters), forming a rosette of thick, blue-green leaves with a distinctive white pattern and sharp terminal spines. The leaves’ surface is rough, adding to its unique texture. Mescal Ceniza blooms in the spring, producing tall spikes of yellow and orange flowers that are particularly attractive to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. The flowering event is infrequent, often taking place after several years, but is quite showy when it occurs.
Mescal Ceniza is valued for its drought tolerance and striking foliage, which makes it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a focal point in water-wise garden designs. It thrives in full sun and requires very little water once established, making it an ideal plant for arid and semi-arid climates. It prefers well-draining soils and is tolerant of poor soil conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Gardeners should be cautious of its sharp spines when planting and handling.CC BY-SA 4.0
