Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agave decipiens, commonly known as False Sisal, is an evergreen succulent native to coastal sand dunes and scrub habitats of southern Florida. This species is arborescent, meaning it resembles a tree, with a trunk that can reach up to 4 meters in height. It is known for producing suckers, which are vegetative offshoots that contribute to its spread. The leaves of Agave decipiens are robust, typically about 100 cm long, but some can reach up to 200 cm. They feature wavy margins with sharp teeth that can be a hazard if not handled with care. The flowering stalks can soar up to 5 meters tall, showcasing a large panicle of greenish-yellow flowers that bloom in the fall and winter, adding a unique aesthetic to gardens during these seasons.
False Sisal is valued for its drought tolerance and architectural form, making it a striking addition to xeriscapes, rock gardens, and coastal landscapes. It is also used for its fiber, which is similar to sisal, hence the common name. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade, requiring very low to low water once established, and prefers well-draining soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, gardeners should be cautious of its sharp leaf margins when planting in areas with foot traffic.CC BY-SA 4.0
