Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agave desmetiana, commonly known as Smooth Agave or Dwarf Century Plant, is an evergreen succulent native to the rocky and arid regions of southeastern Mexico. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), forming a rosette of smooth, fleshy, lance-shaped green leaves with a soft spine at the tip. Unlike many agaves, its leaves lack marginal teeth, giving it a more approachable appearance. The plant produces a tall flower spike up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) high, bearing yellow flowers in the summer, which are attractive to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.
Smooth Agave is valued for its drought tolerance and architectural form, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a container plant in regions with mild winters. It is also used as an accent or specimen plant in Mediterranean and modern landscapes. This agave prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates. It requires well-draining soil and minimal water once established, making it low maintenance. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot. While generally pest-free, agave snout weevil can be a problem, causing damage that may lead to the plant’s death.CC BY-SA 4.0
