Summary

Agave mckelveyana, commonly known as Mckelvey’s Century Plant, is an evergreen succulent native to the desert regions of Arizona, specifically in rocky slopes and plains within chaparral, grasslands, and juniper woodlands. This acaulescent (trunkless) species typically forms a single rosette but may occasionally produce offsets or suckers. The leaves are lance-shaped, up to 40 cm (16 in) long, with gray-green coloration, and are lined with spines along the margins and a sharp terminal spine. The impressive flowering stalk, which emerges after several years, can reach up to 5 m (16 ft) in height and bears clusters of yellowish flowers that are attractive to pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. After flowering, the plant usually dies, leaving behind seeds and any offsets to continue its legacy.

Mckelvey’s Century Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and striking architectural form, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a focal point in water-wise landscapes. It thrives in full sun and requires very low amounts of water once established, reflecting its adaptation to arid environments. Well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot. While it is generally low-maintenance, gardeners should be cautious of the sharp spines when handling or planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
