Summary

Agave murpheyi, commonly known as Murphey’s Century Plant, is an evergreen succulent native to the Sonoran Desert region, including the Southwestern United States and Northwest Mexico. It typically forms a large rosette of fleshy leaves that can reach up to 80 centimeters in length and 20 centimeters in width, displaying a range of green to blue-green hues with pale banding. The leaves may exhibit a slight curl towards the center and are adorned with small, straight teeth along the margins and a terminal spine up to 2 centimeters long. Murphey’s Century Plant is particularly noted for its impressive flowering stalk, which can reach 3 to 4 meters in height, bearing numerous greenish flowers with purple or brown tips, each up to 7.5 centimeters long. While the plant rarely produces fruit, as the flowers often abort before fruiting, the inflorescence itself is a striking feature when in bloom.

Murphey’s Century Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and architectural form, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a focal point in water-wise landscapes. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires minimal water once established, preferring well-draining soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it is important to note that the sharp spines and teeth on the leaves can pose a hazard, and it should be planted with care in areas where people or pets may come into contact with it. Additionally, after flowering, which may take several years, the main rosette dies, but the plant often produces offsets or "pups" that can be used to propagate new plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
