Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agave ocahui, commonly known as Ocahui Century Plant, is an evergreen succulent native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Sonora and Chihuahua in Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to a height and width of 2 feet (0.6 meters), forming a dense rosette of narrow, blue-green leaves with sharp terminal spines. The Ocahui Century Plant blooms once in its lifetime, producing a tall flower stalk with yellow flowers in the summer, which are particularly showy and attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.
The Ocahui Century Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and architectural form, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a focal point in water-wise landscapes. It is also used in container plantings due to its manageable size. This plant requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun and well-draining soil. It is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. While it is generally pest-resistant, Agave snout weevil can be a problem. The sharp spines and edges of the leaves can also pose a hazard in areas with pedestrian traffic, so placement should be considered carefully.CC BY-SA 4.0
