Estimated Native Range
Summary
Agrostis scabra, commonly known as Rough Bentgrass, is a semi-evergreen or deciduous perennial grass native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, grasslands, and alpine regions across much of North America and parts of East Asia. It typically forms dense tufts or bunches, growing mainly upright to a height of 10 to 60 centimeters. The leaves are narrow, rough-textured with tiny hairs, and can reach up to 14 centimeters long. The inflorescence is a wide, open panicle of spreading, thread-like branches with small spikelets, each a few millimeters long, that bloom in late spring to summer. The flowers are not particularly showy, but the plant has a delicate, fine-textured appearance.
Rough Bentgrass is valued for its hardiness and adaptability, often used in revegetating disturbed land in alpine regions due to its tolerance to cold climates. It is also appreciated for its response to burning, which can stimulate increased growth. This grass is suitable for erosion control and as a ground cover in restoration projects. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium amounts of water, preferring well-drained soils. While not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, it can be utilized in naturalistic plantings and meadow gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
