Summary
Ajuga decumbens, commonly known as the Trailing Carpet Bugle, is a perennial herb native to forest margins, grasslands, and open areas in China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. It is often found at altitudes between 1312-7546 feet. This groundcover plant typically forms a dense mat no more than 4 inches tall, with erect flower spikes that can reach up to 12 inches. The foliage is attractive, with leaves that can range from green to bronze, and the plant produces showy spikes of purple to white flowers from April to June, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Trailing Carpet Bugle is valued for its medicinal properties and is used in traditional medicine for its analgesic, decoagulant, depurative, febrifuge, and haemostatic effects. In cultivation, it is appreciated for its low maintenance and ability to form a dense carpet, making it an excellent choice for ground cover, borders, and rock gardens. It thrives in partial shade to full sun, prefers moist but well-drained soils, and is generally drought-tolerant once established. Ajuga decumbens can spread aggressively, so it may require management to keep it within bounds.CC BY-SA 4.0
