Estimated Native Range
Summary
Ajuga nipponensis, commonly known as Japanese Bugleweed, is a semi-deciduous herbaceous plant native to South China and temperate East Asia. It exhibits a rapid growth rate, typically reaching heights of 0.5-1 feet (0.15-0.3 meters) and spreading 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters) wide. Japanese Bugleweed forms a dense mat of foliage, with leaves that can vary in color from green to bronze. Its blue, showy flowers emerge in spring, creating a striking display against the foliage. The plant is also known for its ability to attract pollinators such as bees.
In cultivation, Japanese Bugleweed is valued for its ground-covering abilities, particularly in shady areas where grass might struggle to grow. It is an excellent choice for border planting, underplanting in woodland gardens, and for erosion control on slopes. This plant thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers medium draining loam or clay soils. It requires medium amounts of water, making it relatively low-maintenance once established. While generally disease-resistant, it can suffer from crown rot in overly wet conditions and may become invasive if not managed properly.CC BY-SA 4.0
