Summary

Alchemilla mollis, commonly known as garden lady’s-mantle or lady’s mantle, is a herbaceous perennial native to mountainous regions and grasslands of southern Europe, including the Carpathians and the Caucasus. It has been widely naturalized in northern Europe and North America. Typically, it grows to 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in) tall and wide, with a clumping habit. The leaves are circular, palmately veined, with a scalloped and serrated margin, and have a soft, velvety texture. They are known for collecting dewdrops in a picturesque manner. The chartreuse yellow flowers appear in dense cymes from late spring to early summer and are mildly showy, adding a soft, frothy texture to garden borders.

Garden lady’s-mantle is valued for its foliage, which is especially attractive when beaded with moisture, and for its easy care and robustness. It is often used in borders, cottage gardens, and as ground cover. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, but is tolerant of a range of soil conditions. While it self-seeds readily, which can be a benefit for naturalistic plantings, it can also become invasive, particularly in North America. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to spread and manage self-seeding to prevent unwanted invasiveness.CC BY-SA 4.0
