Summary

Allium canadense, commonly known as Meadow Garlic, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including prairies, open woodlands, and plains across the Central and Eastern United States and Canada. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). The plant features narrow, grass-like leaves that arise from the base of the stem, which culminates in a dome-like cluster of star-shaped, pink or white flowers in the spring and early summer, from May to June. These flowers can be replaced by bulblets, and when present, they exhibit hermaphroditic characteristics, being pollinated by native bees and other insects. The bulbs are edible and covered with a dense skin of brown fibers, emitting a strong onion odor and taste.

Meadow Garlic is valued for its ornamental flowers and as a culinary herb in gardens. It is also appreciated for its ease of maintenance and ability to naturalize in suitable conditions. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun, requires medium amounts of water, and prefers soils with medium drainage. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can sometimes be aggressive in spreading, which gardeners should consider when planting. It is not typically invasive outside its native range but should be monitored to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
