Summary
Allium canadense var. mobilense, commonly known as Meadow Garlic, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including prairies, open woodlands, and fields in the Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 0.7-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and a width of 0.5 feet (0.2 meters). This plant forms clumps of grass-like foliage and produces umbels of star-shaped, pink, purple, and white flowers in the late spring to early summer, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators.
Meadow Garlic is valued for its ornamental flowers and its edible bulbs and leaves, which have a mild garlic flavor and are used in culinary applications. It is suitable for border planting, herb gardens, and naturalized areas. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate part shade, and it adapts to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from medium amounts of water during the growing season. Meadow Garlic is relatively low-maintenance and is not commonly affected by serious diseases or pests. However, it can self-seed prolifically under favorable conditions, which may be considered undesirable in some gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
