Summary

Allium maximowiczii, commonly known as Oriental Chive, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including grasslands, meadows, and the edges of forests in Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, and northeastern China. It typically produces one or two bulbs from which emerges a scape that can reach up to 28 inches in height, accompanied by tubular leaves. The plant is noted for its densely packed umbels of large, showy pink or red flowers that bloom in late summer to early fall.

Oriental Chive is valued for its ornamental flowers and is often used in border plantings, rock gardens, and as a culinary herb. Its ease of maintenance and tolerance of a range of soil types make it a versatile choice for gardeners. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. It is not commonly associated with serious diseases or pests, although onion fly and thrips can sometimes be problematic. Oriental Chive can spread readily by seed, so gardeners may need to manage its spread to prevent it from becoming invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
