Summary

Allium ramosum, commonly known as fragrant-flowered garlic or Chinese chives, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats in northern Asia, including grasslands, meadows, stream banks, and forest clearings, as well as elevations of 1,640-6,890 feet in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, the Russian Far East, and northern China. This species typically forms clumps with narrow bulbs and produces scapes that can reach up to 24 inches tall. Its flowers are white or pale red with a distinctive red midvein and bloom in the summer, offering a light, pleasant fragrance. The plant’s foliage is also notable for its long, slender, green leaves that resemble chives.

Fragrant-flowered garlic is valued for its culinary and medicinal uses. It is a traditional seasoning in northern Chinese and Mongolian cuisine, often used to flavor boiled mutton or as a filling for dumplings. In addition to its culinary popularity, it is reputed to treat stomach ailments. Gardeners appreciate this plant for its ease of maintenance and its ability to thrive in a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy, provided they have good drainage. It prefers full sun to partial shade and requires moderate watering. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to onion fly and thrips. In ornamental cultivation, it is used in herb gardens, as a border plant, or for naturalizing areas. It can also be grown in containers.CC BY-SA 4.0
