Estimated Native Range
Summary
Allium siculum, commonly known as Honey Garlic, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to a range of habitats including grasslands, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands in Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. It can reach up to 1.2 meters in height and is notable for its showy clusters of gracefully drooping bell-shaped blossoms that appear in May to early June. The florets are cream-colored with a maroon streak down each petal, white flared tips, and a greenish base. After flowering, it produces decorative, erect seed pods in late summer. The blue-gray foliage is distinctive, being triangular in cross-section and strongly twisting. When cut, the plant releases a penetrating, skunky odor.
Honey Garlic is valued for its unique twisted foliage and the striking contrast of its blossoms. It is often used in flower gardens for its aesthetic appeal and is particularly suitable for planting in shaded areas where other Allium species may not thrive. It requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soil, and can tolerate both full sun and part shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, gardeners should be aware of its strong odor when handling the plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
