Summary

Alluaudia procera, commonly known as Madagascar Ocotillo, is a deciduous succulent tree native to the spiny thickets of southwestern Madagascar. It can grow to a height of 15-20 feet (5-6 meters) and a width of 2 feet (0.6 meters). This plant has a distinctive appearance with thick, water-storing stems and small, deciduous leaves that drop during the prolonged dry season. The green and white flowers, which appear in the summer, are not particularly showy but are of interest to collectors and enthusiasts of xerophytic plants.

Madagascar Ocotillo is valued for its unique architectural form and is often used as a focal point in xeriscape gardens, rockeries, and in collections of succulents. It requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun and with low water needs, making it suitable for drought-tolerant landscapes. It prefers soils with excellent drainage. While it is not closely related to the North American ocotillo, its similar appearance can provide a striking visual substitute in gardens. Potential problems include root rot if overwatered and susceptibility to mealybugs and scale insects. It is not known to be invasive when grown outside its native range, but care should be taken as it can become a spiny hazard if not properly managed.CC BY-SA 4.0
