Summary

Alocasia nycteris, commonly known as Bat Alocasia or Batwing Alocasia, is a perennial herb endemic to the rainforests of Panay Island in the Philippines. It can grow up to 4.9 feet tall and is notable for its dark glossy green leaves, which are uniquely shaped like bat wings, adding to its ornamental value. The plant produces inflorescences with a pale green spathe and a spadix that is pale yellow, typically blooming in the warm months. The flowers are followed by clusters of orange berries that add to the visual interest of the plant. Bat Alocasia thrives in the understory of rainforests, where it enjoys the humid and shaded conditions.

In cultivation, Bat Alocasia is valued for its exotic appearance and is often used as a focal point in tropical-themed gardens or as a potted houseplant. It requires consistently moist soil, high humidity, and protection from direct sunlight to mimic its native rainforest habitat. While it is relatively easy to maintain under the right conditions, it is susceptible to common houseplant pests such as spider mites and mealybugs. Additionally, all parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can be irritating if ingested or if they come into contact with skin.CC BY-SA 4.0
