Summary

Aloe cameronii, commonly known as Starfish Aloe, is an evergreen succulent native to rocky hillsides and open grasslands in Zimbabwe and Malawi in Southern Africa. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). This aloe species forms dense rosettes of lance-shaped, fleshy leaves that are a distinctive coppery red color when grown in full sun and under drought stress. The red to orange tubular flowers, which are borne on tall spikes, appear in late fall to early winter and are attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Starfish Aloe is valued for its striking foliage color and its drought tolerance, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a container plant. It requires minimal maintenance and thrives in arid conditions. In cultivation, it is essential to provide well-draining soil and to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. It can be propagated easily from offsets. While generally pest-resistant, Aloe cameronii can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects. It is not considered invasive when grown outside its native range, but care should be taken to avoid overwatering and to provide adequate sunlight to maintain its vibrant leaf color.CC BY-SA 4.0
