Summary

Aloe spectabilis, commonly known as Royal Aloe, is a succulent plant native to the rocky outcrops and open grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal and the Mpumalanga provinces in South Africa. It can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) tall and is characterized by its large, robust rosettes of fleshy, gray-green leaves. The leaves may have reddish-brown teeth along the margins, adding to its ornamental appeal. Royal Aloe is particularly noted for its spectacular flowering spikes, which can reach up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) in height, bearing tubular red to orange flowers that are highly attractive to birds and insects. The blooming season typically occurs in the winter, providing a dramatic floral display during a time when few other plants are in flower.

Royal Aloe is valued not only for its medicinal properties, which include the soothing gel found within its leaves, but also for its striking appearance in the landscape. It is often used as a focal point in xeriscaping, rock gardens, and in large containers. This aloe prefers full sun and requires well-drained soils to prevent root rot. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for water-wise gardens. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from aloe rust, especially in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
