Summary

Aloe vanbalenii, commonly known as Van Balen’s Aloe, is an evergreen succulent native to rocky outcrops and grassy slopes in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa and Eswatini. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters). This aloe species forms rosettes of long, curved leaves that are a distinctive coppery-red color, especially when grown in full sun. The leaves are lined with small teeth along the margins, adding to its ornamental appeal. Van Balen’s Aloe blooms in the winter and spring, producing tall spikes of tubular flowers that transition from green to yellow and orange as they mature, attracting pollinators such as bees and birds.

Van Balen’s Aloe is valued for its striking foliage and showy flowers, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, succulent collections, and as a focal point in xeriscaped areas. It is well-suited to container gardening, allowing for protection in regions with cold winters. This aloe requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun and needing very low to low amounts of water. It is best planted in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects. Gardeners should be cautious as the sap can cause skin irritation in some individuals.CC BY-SA 4.0
