Summary
Alopecurus magellanicus, commonly known as Alpine Foxtail, is a perennial grass that thrives in the Arctic and temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, including alpine and subalpine zones, tundra, and moist meadows. It is particularly adapted to cold climates and is often found in wetlands, alongside streams, and in forest clearings, usually on clay or loamy soils. This grass typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters) and a width of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). Its appearance is characterized by dense, spike-like inflorescences that are yellowish-green and bloom in the summer, providing a subtle ornamental quality.
Alpine Foxtail is valued for its ability to thrive in cold environments and its adaptability to wet conditions, making it suitable for water gardens, rain gardens, and as a ground cover in cooler climates. It is also used for erosion control due to its dense root system. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and medium draining loam or clay soils, with medium water requirements. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to rust diseases under certain conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
