Estimated Native Range
Summary
Alyssum lenense, commonly known as Lena alyssum, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the steppes and semi-desert regions of Russia, Central Asia, and northern China. It typically grows to a height and width of 0.5-0.7 feet (0.2-0.2 meters), forming a low, mounding cushion of foliage. The plant features small, lance-shaped leaves and produces clusters of tiny, fragrant white flowers from late spring to early fall, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Lena alyssum is valued for its extended blooming period and its ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine collections, and as a ground cover in sunny, dry areas. It is also used to edge borders and in container plantings. This plant prefers full sun exposure and requires well-drained soil to prevent root rot. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from fungal diseases in overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
