Summary

Amelanchier canadensis, commonly known as Serviceberry or Shadbush, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and wetlands across eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to southern Ontario, and in the United States from Maine south to Alabama. It is not restricted to wet sites but is also found in dry woods and rocky slopes, adapting to a range of soil conditions, from sea level up to 200 m in altitude. Serviceberry typically grows to 0.5–8 m tall with one to many stems and a narrow, fastigiate crown. The plant is known for its showy white flowers that bloom in early spring, followed by edible purple-black berries in early summer.

Serviceberry is valued for its multi-season interest, with white spring blossoms, edible fruit that attracts wildlife, and striking fall foliage that turns shades of yellow, orange, and red. It is used in urban planting, as a border shrub, for naturalizing, and in wildlife gardens. Serviceberry prefers full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soils. It is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to rust diseases and fire blight. Despite these issues, its adaptability and ecological benefits make it a popular choice for gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
