Summary

Amelanchier laevis, commonly known as Smooth Shadbush, Smooth Serviceberry, or Allegheny Serviceberry, is a deciduous small tree or large shrub native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and along streams in eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to Ontario, Minnesota, and Iowa, and south to Georgia and Alabama. It typically grows up to 9 meters (30 ft) tall and is noted for its smooth, gray bark and slender, upright form. The plant produces showy clusters of pink-tinged white flowers in early spring, followed by small, round, edible berries that mature to a dark purple-black in summer. The foliage turns a striking orange-red in the fall.

The Allegheny Serviceberry is valued for its multi-season interest, with beautiful spring flowers, edible fruit that attracts wildlife, and vibrant fall foliage. It is used in cultivation for naturalized plantings, as a specimen plant, or in shrub borders, and is suitable for urban environments due to its adaptability. It prefers full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soils, but is tolerant of a range of soil conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to rust and leaf spot diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
