Summary

Amelanchier sanguinea, commonly known as red-twigged shadbush or roundleaf serviceberry, is a deciduous shrub native to a variety of habitats including moist woodlands, forest edges, and along streams in eastern and central North America. Its range extends from New Brunswick to Saskatchewan, and south to northern Georgia, encompassing eastern Canada, the northeastern United States, and the Great Lakes region. This shrub typically grows up to 10 feet tall and features a rounded form with smooth, gray bark. In spring, it bears clusters of showy, white flowers that give way to small, round fruits. The fruits are red when young and mature to a purple or dark-blue color, resembling berries but are technically pomes, and are favored by birds and other wildlife.

The red-twigged shadbush is valued for its multi-season interest, starting with its delicate white flowers in early spring, followed by its edible fruit in summer, and concluding with vibrant fall foliage. It is often used in naturalized plantings, as a border shrub, or for wildlife gardens. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, but can adapt to a range of soil conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to rust and leaf spot diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
