Summary
Amoreuxia palmatifida, commonly known as Mexican Yellowshow, is a perennial herb native to arid and semi-arid regions, including the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts of Arizona, northern Mexico, and extending into the dry Motagua Valley of Guatemala. It typically forms a low-growing ground cover and is well-adapted to hot, dry conditions. This plant can reach up to 1 foot in height and spreads out to cover the ground with its palmate leaves. The bright-orange flowers with distinctive purple spots on four of the five petals and tiered banks of twelve stamens with purple and orange anthers bloom from late spring to early fall, adding vibrant color to the landscape. The flowers are showy and attract pollinators, while the long, narrow capsules contain seeds that are dispersed by wind and water.
Mexican Yellowshow is valued for its drought tolerance and unique, colorful flowers, making it suitable for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a ground cover in arid landscapes. It is also historically significant as a food source for indigenous peoples. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, thriving in full sun to part shade and preferring well-drained soils. While it tolerates low water conditions, moderate watering can encourage more abundant flowering. It is not commonly affected by diseases or pests, but overwatering can lead to root rot. Mexican Yellowshow is not typically invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond desired areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
