Summary
Anacamptis morio, commonly known as Green-Winged Orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant with a bulbous base, native to a variety of habitats including calcareous grasslands, meadows, light woodlands, and occasionally wetlands across Europe, the Middle East, and the Caucasus. It typically grows to a height of 40 cm. The Green-Winged Orchid is characterized by its striking inflorescences, which appear from late April to June in the British Isles and as early as February in warmer regions like France. The flowers range in color from white to pink to deep purple, and are arranged in a loose, linear cluster atop a single stalk. Each flower resembles a helmet, contributing to the plant’s ornamental value. The leaves are lanceolate and form a rosette at the base.
This orchid is valued for its long flowering period and the variety of colors it brings to the garden. It is suitable for naturalizing in meadows or for informal garden settings, particularly in wildflower gardens. It requires full sun and well-drained soil, with a preference for alkaline conditions. While it can tolerate low water availability, it benefits from consistent moisture during the growing season. Green-Winged Orchids may be challenging to cultivate due to their specific mycorrhizal associations required for growth. They are not commonly available in the nursery trade, but enthusiasts may propagate them from seed or by division of tubers. Care should be taken to avoid overwatering and to provide a winter dormancy period.CC BY-SA 4.0
