Summary

Anaphalis margaritacea, commonly known as Western Pearly Everlasting, is an evergreen perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including dry open woods, prairies, and alpine regions across North America and much of Asia. It typically grows erect up to about 1.2 meters (3 ft 11 in) in height and features narrow, alternate leaves that are notable for their woolly texture due to tiny hairs on the undersides. The plant’s stems are dry and brittle, and it produces clusters of small, whitish to yellowish flowers in a corymb inflorescence, which are particularly showy from midsummer to fall.

Western Pearly Everlasting is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and naturalized areas. The flowers are excellent for dried floral arrangements, and the plant is often used in borders, rock gardens, and as a ground cover. It requires full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
