Estimated Native Range
Summary
Anchusa azurea, commonly known as Italian Bugloss, is a bristly herbaceous perennial that is native to open woodlands, grasslands, and scrub areas in Europe, western Asia, and the eastern Maghreb. It can grow up to 5 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide, with rough, lance-shaped leaves and clusters of bright violet-blue, tubular flowers that bloom from late spring to midsummer. The flowers are particularly showy and can add a splash of color to any garden setting. Italian Bugloss is known for its edible flowers, which are sometimes used as a garnish or in salads, and for its ability to attract pollinators such as bees.
In cultivation, Italian Bugloss is valued for its vibrant flowers and its ease of maintenance. It is often used in borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade, and it requires well-drained soil. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells. Italian Bugloss may self-seed under optimal conditions, and while not typically invasive, it can spread in the garden if not managed. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
