Estimated Native Range
Summary
Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as green chiretta, is an annual herbaceous plant native to the shaded, moist understorey of tropical forests in India and Sri Lanka. It typically grows to a height of up to 43 inches (110 cm). Green chiretta has a slender, erect habit with quadrangular stems and lance-shaped leaves. The plant produces small, tubular, pink flowers arranged in spreading panicles, which are not particularly showy but are distinctive. It is often found in disturbed sites within its native habitat.
Green chiretta is valued for its medicinal properties, particularly its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It is widely used in traditional medicine and is gaining popularity as a dietary supplement for immune support. In cultivation, it requires moist, well-drained soil and partial to full shade, mimicking its native forest floor conditions. While it is not typically grown for ornamental purposes, it can be cultivated in herb gardens or as part of a medicinal plant collection. Gardeners should be aware that Andrographis paniculata can be potentially invasive outside its native range, and it is advisable to consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
