Estimated Native Range
Summary
Andropogon leucostachyus, commonly known as Matojillo Bluestem, is a deciduous perennial grass native to the open grasslands, savannas, and light woodlands of South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. It typically grows to a height of 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters) and a width of 2 feet (0.6 meters), featuring upright clumps of slender stems with feathery, silver-white flower spikes that appear in late summer to fall. The grass provides a striking visual texture in the landscape and is particularly noted for its movement in the breeze.
Matojillo Bluestem is valued for its adaptability to a range of soil types, its drought tolerance once established, and its ability to provide erosion control on slopes. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, prairie restorations, and as an accent in garden borders. This species prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. It is not known to have significant disease or pest problems, but in some regions, it may self-seed and become somewhat invasive if not managed.CC BY-SA 4.0
