Estimated Native Range
Summary
Androsace laevigata, commonly known as Smooth Rock Jasmine or cliff dwarf primrose, is a mat-forming herbaceous perennial native to alpine and subalpine zones, particularly on cliffs and rocky slopes in the Pacific Northwest of North America. It is found west of the Cascade Range in British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington, typically below 8,000 feet in elevation. This species thrives in well-drained, rocky soils and is adapted to the harsh conditions of its native mountainous habitats.
Androsace laevigata reaches a modest height of about 0.8-2.8 inches and produces a striking display of deep pink to rose five-lobed flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are showy and attract pollinators such as bees. The plant’s low-growing habit and attractive blooms make it suitable for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and as a ground cover in suitable climates. It requires minimal maintenance once established and is valued for its ability to thrive in poor soils and its resistance to deer and rabbit browsing. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil to prevent root rot. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, overwatering and poor drainage can lead to fungal issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
