Summary
Anemone quinquefolia, commonly known as Wood Anemone, is a deciduous perennial herb native to rich, deciduous woodlands and forest floors in Eastern North America, including the Eastern United States and Canada. It typically grows to a height of 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) and spreads 4-6 inches (10-15 cm). The plant features deeply lobed leaves and produces a single, showy white flower, sometimes tinged with pink or blue, atop each stem in early spring. The flowers are followed by clusters of dry, woolly fruits. Wood Anemone is valued for its delicate flowers and its ability to naturalize in shady woodland gardens.
Wood Anemone is ideal for naturalistic plantings and shaded garden areas, such as woodland gardens and shaded borders. It thrives under deciduous trees, where it can receive dappled sunlight. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and can tolerate light to medium shade. While it requires consistent moisture, it is important to avoid waterlogged conditions. Wood Anemone can spread to form a carpet of foliage and flowers, making it an attractive ground cover. However, it can be slow to establish and may take several years to form a significant clump. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to leaf miners and rust.CC BY-SA 4.0
