Estimated Native Range
Summary
Anisacanthus wrightii, commonly known as Texas Firecracker or Hummingbird Bush, is a deciduous shrub native to the semi-arid regions, including the Chihuahuan Desert and the Edwards Plateau in Texas, as well as parts of northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters) and a width of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters), with an open, airy form. The plant is notable for its tubular flowers, which are a fiery orange to red color, blooming profusely from summer into fall and attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers are quite showy, and the shrub is often used for its ornamental value.
Texas Firecracker is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in hot, dry climates, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. It is commonly used in border plantings, as an accent shrub, and for attracting wildlife. This shrub prefers full sun exposure and is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is low-maintenance, occasional pruning can help maintain a more compact shape and encourage denser flowering.CC BY-SA 4.0
