Summary
Anisodontea capensis, commonly known as African mallow or Cape mallow, is a semi-evergreen subshrub native to the fynbos and scrub regions of the Cape Provinces in South Africa. It typically grows to a height of 3-5 feet and spreads up to 35 inches wide. The plant features green, hairy branches that mature to a brownish-grey hue. Its foliage consists of ovate, three-lobed leaves that add texture to the plant’s appearance. African mallow produces a profusion of fuchsia, mauve, or pink flowers with distinctive red centers, blooming from late winter to the first frost, providing extended color in the garden. The flowers are moderately showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
African mallow is valued for its long flowering season and the vibrant color it brings to gardens. It is well-suited for use in mixed borders, as a specimen plant, or in containers. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soil. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged hot and dry periods. It is relatively low maintenance but may need protection from frost in cooler climates. Pruning in late winter can help maintain a compact form and encourage more prolific blooming.CC BY-SA 4.0
